Additional performance of “Jesus Christ Superstar” at Cotuit Center for the Arts due to popular demand.

Following a 100% sell-out of 12 previously announced performances of “Jesus Christ Superstar”, Cotuit Center for the Arts has added one additional performance on Thursday, March 22 at 7:30 PM.

“The response to this show has been incredible. The entire run was sold out by the end of the opening weekend, setting a new record for us” says David Kuehn, Executive Director of the Center. “The reviews and audience reactions have been tremendous and the cast and crew have generously agreed to add one performance.” Tickets for this added performance will not last long.

Cotuit Center for the Arts presents “Jesus Christ Superstar” March 9 through March 31. Performances from March 9 to 25 are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 PM and Sunday at 2 PM; performances during the last week, from March 29 to 31, are Thursday and Friday at 7:30 PM, and Saturday at 2 PM.

“Jesus Christ Superstar,” the 1971 highly acclaimed rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, still electrifies audiences and actors alike for its powerful story, stirring vocals, and dramatic visual production nearly 50 years after its debut. Loosely based on Gospel accounts of the last week in the life of Jesus of Nazareth, the show recounts, imagines, and interprets the relationships between Jesus, Judas Iscariot, Mary Magdalene, his disciples and followers, the people of Jerusalem, and the Roman leaders who ultimately crucified him.

The story is told largely from Judas’s perspective. Concerned that Jesus’s popularity—his growing superstardom—will endanger the group’s larger mission, and worried about Jesus’s relationship with Mary Magdalene, Judas wrestles with his decision to betray Jesus, while Jesus struggles with his role as both leader and martyr.

Producer/directors Stephen Colella and Rebecca Riley are both longtime fans of the show. “I would sing and dance to the record for hours in my parents’ kitchen,” said Riley. “The music has always had a special place in my heart.”

Colella discovered the album when his father received the LP as a record club selection. It quickly became one of Colella’s favorites. He has acted in the show twice on the Cape, once as Jesus and once as Judas. He and Riley decided to do the show last year, when they
