Artists Jeff Rutchik, Jackie deRuyter, and Impossible Dream: an Open Juried Exhibit at Cotuit Center for the Arts
May. 22, 2018 / Press ReleaseCotuit Center for the Arts presents three exhibits June 16 through July 29: “Changing Horizons: Walking Cape Cod Beaches” by Jeff Rutchik; “Textured Movement: Form in Fiber” by Jackie deRuyter; and “Impossible Dream,” an open juried exhibit. There will be a talk with the artists at 5 PM on Saturday, June 16, followed by a reception until 7 PM.
Jeff Rutchik’s inspiration comes from the people he has met along his life’s journey, past and present. “Their energy is represented through the motions of the brush strokes and their spirits through the imagery of the eye, which guides me to see the landscapes of the world with an enriched perspective.”
Rutchik works with acrylics, pastels, and digital media. This exhibition focuses on his large landscape and seascape paintings, particularly “when the sun goes down and the sand gets cool.” “The long walks,” he writes, “create spaces for the imagination to run wild.”
Fiber artist Jackie deRuyter creates sculptures from fabric. “I choose to work with fiber for its versatility,” she writes. “Fabric can be layered, stitched, painted, and reassembled into a three-dimensional object. I work intuitively, letting color and texture guide the process. Layering many different materials and techniques creates depth and dimension in my final pieces.”
DeRuyter describes her work as abstract in nature, but with a feeling of movement. Prior to pursuing her passion for art, she earned a PhD in cell biology from the University of Massachusetts, and she continues to be fascinated by science and nature.
“Impossible Dream” is an open juried exhibition timed to correspond with CCftA’s highly anticipated summer musical theater production of “Man of La Mancha.” The drop-off date for gallery-ready pieces is Monday, June 11, from 10 AM to 4 PM. The entry fee per piece is $10 for CCftA members and $15 for non-members.
There is no charge for admission. The gallery is open 10 AM to 4 PM daily, and during evening events at the center. Cotuit Center for the Arts is at 4404 Route 28 in Cotuit.
