Cotuit Center for the Arts presents MAC and Bistro award-winning singer and actress Dawn Derow in “My Ship: Songs from 1941” on Friday, September 7, at 7:30 PM.

One of the standout New York cabaret shows of 2017, My Ship: Songs from 1941” earned Derow a MAC Award for “Best Female Vocalist.” The show taps into the 1941 “Hit Parade” with songs like "Chattanooga Choo Choo,” “Boggie Woogie Bugle Boy," and "The White Cliffs of Dover."

My Ship” explores the emotional climate of America as it entered WWII and opens our minds and hearts to the women of that era, whether they were a “Rosie the Riveter,” a housewife raising children alone, a USO entertainer, or a nightclub singer. Derow revisits the music that comforted and uplifted a nation until there was peace “At Last.”

The show has been praised as “a wonderfully crafted work and a perfect storm of entertainment” by Cabaret Scenes Magazine. BistroAwards.com wrote “Extraordinary…a remarkable song list. Don’t miss it!”

“My Ship” is directed by Jeff Harnar, with musical direction by Ian Herman, who also plays piano. He is joined by Ron Ormsby on bass and Bart Weisman on drums.

Derow grew up on Cape Cod. Her parents co-owned the Lighthouse Restaurant in Wellfleet for 30 years. As a teenager, when she wasn’t working at the restaurant, Derow was singing and performing on Cape Cod, preparing for her future career as a singer/actress. She studied classical music at Boston Conservatory and then moved to New York City to pursue a career in musical theater.

Since then, Derow performed all over the world in operas, classical concerts, musicals, and on cruise ships before returning to NYC in 2007, where she began performing cabaret shows focused on Great American Songbook standards, pop classics, and her own original songs.

In 2015, Derow returned to her opera roots and won a coveted 2016 Bistro Award as “Outstanding Vocalist” for her show “Legit—A Classical Cabaret.” She followed that in 2017 with her critically acclaimed show “My Ship.”

In addition to her performance at Cotuit Center for the Arts, Derow will be the featured performer for the Cape Cod Children’s Place Benefit, “Wish Upon a Star” at 11 Shore Road in North Truro on Saturday August 11. She will also perform at Tin Pan Alley, 269 Commercial Street, Provincetown, on August 14 and 15 at 9:30 PM, August 23 from 3:30 to 6:30 PM, and September 8 from 6:30 to 9:30.

Derow is thrilled to be performing on Cape Cod again. “Bringing my award-winning show, “My Ship,” to the Cotuit Center is an award in itself,” she said. “I’m delighted I get to share the songs of 1941 with my fellow Cape Codders, both locals and visitors. And I’ve always loved the energy of P-Town, so the residency at Tin Pan Alley is doubly rewarding since that’s where “My Ship” was launched two years ago. I can’t wait!”
