Press Release: “Lulu + Mona vs. The Minotaur” at Cotuit Center for the Arts
Jul. 11, 2019 / Press ReleaseThe Theater Under the Stairs presents “Lulu + Mona vs. The Minotaur,” an original play by Holly Erin McCarthy, at the Black Box Theater at Cotuit Center for the Arts on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 9 to 11 and August 16 to 18. Performances are 10 AM and 12:30 PM on Friday and Saturday, and 10 AM on Sunday.
A brand new musical by the creators of “Lulu’s Lemonade Stand,” “Lulu and Mona vs. The Minotaur” is a thrilling new adventure-comedy for the whole family.
A mysterious prophecy and a missing friend, an alarming labyrinth with no obvious end. Can Mona and Lulu beat the clock and best the beast? Or will their brave rescue attempt be foiled by carnivorous crabs and confusing clues? Find out this summer!
The new tale brings together Lulu (Celia Cota) from “Lulu’s Lemonade Stand” and Mona (Nora Canaday) from “The Kind of True Story of Mona Coyote.” “Lulu” was based on Homer’s “The Odyssey,” and “Mona” was based on Miguel de Cervantes’ classic tale “Don Quixote.”
The 10 person ensemble includes Cota and Canaday along with six other young actors, performing alongside Cotuit favorites, Anthony Teixeira and Hannah Carrita.
"’Lulu’s Lemonade Stand’ is anything but straightforward; it is unpredictable, swashbuckling, zany, magical, colorful, richly developed and loaded with fun for the whole family," wrote Ellen Petry Whalen on wickedlocal.com, when the show, which premiered in 2013, was presented in 2017.
“We are very excited about the show and the cast,” said McCarthy. “It is thrilling, silly, and laugh-out-loud funny for kids and their parents. The cast is always ready to try new things. It’s so rewarding to see them make these characters their own.”
The book and lyrics are by McCarthy. Music is by McCarthy, with arrangements by Henry Buck. Sander Goldman created the show poster. Music Direction is by Anthony Teixeira. Choreography is by Hannah Carrita.
