Press Release: “Melissa Errico: Sondheim Sublime” at Cotuit Center for the Arts

Cotuit Center for the Arts and Mark Cortale present Broadway @ Cotuit Center for the Arts’ production, “Melissa Errico: Sondheim Sublime,” with Ted Firth at the piano, on Tuesday, July 23 at 7:30.

Acclaimed actress/singer/writer Melissa Errico has performed numerous sold-out Sondheim concerts in New York, Chicago, Washington DC, and London. Now, she brings those songs, and her unique vision of Broadway’s greatest living songwriter, to Cotuit. With her unique mix of witty talk and passionate singing, her “Sondheim Sublime” is guaranteed to be the Broadway-cabaret event of the summer season.

“I adore the sly and satiric Steve, but for this album, I wanted to tap into a special vein of tenderness and passion that his music offers, a river of emotion that is so deeply sympathetic that it takes my breath away,” writes Errico in her liner notes to “Sondheim Sublime.” “That’s what I think of as the exalted Sondheim, the ecstatic Sondheim—Sondheim sublime. It’s the best thing in the world to sing, all of the time.”

The Wall Street Journal’s Terry Teachout called the album “The best all-Sondheim album ever recorded, in which radiantly warm singing and sensitive, intelligent interpretation are tightly and inseparably entwined.”

Errico explores the soulful Sondheim, the heartfelt, hungering Sondheim, author of songs of aching love and slowly dawning wisdom, the exalted, and reflective Sondheim. With pianist Ted Firth, Errico offers a new understanding of Sondheim’s emotional intensity, as she sings, by turns, in tones hushed, electric, and ecstatic. It’s a program of songs of love and life lessons.

Errico was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress for the musical “Amour,” and starred in “My Fair Lady,” “Anna Karenina,” “High Society,” “Dracula,” “Les Miserables,” “White Christmas,” and other shows. She has also starred in several productions with Irish Repertory Theatre, including “On a Clear Day You Can See Forever,” and received six Drama Desk nominations. She has released five solo studio CDs and has performed with most of the major symphonies in the US and UK and in many jazz and cabaret venues.

Errico has served on The National Endowment for the Arts, has published multiple essays in The New York Times, and is a contributing essayist in The Purist and other magazines. Her television roles include the series “Central Park West” by Darren Star and recurring roles on Steven Soderbergh’s “The Knick” and Showtime’s “Billions.” Errico recently finished shooting a role in “The Magnificent Meyersons,” an Eric Oppenheimer film with Kate Mulgrew.
