Our newest exhibition brings to Cotuit three artists whose remarkable use of vibrant colors in a variety of mediums will provide visitors with an exciting visual and textural experience. Just as importantly, their works encourage us to think about the health of our environment, particularly the precious ocean so important to lovers of Cape Cod.
Joan Hall: Hear the Ocean Sobbing
A long-time sailor, Joan Hall uses her paper-based works to initiate a conversation about ocean advocacy concerning primarily plastic pollution. She is drawn to the tension between control and surrender. Her sculptural works use rich textures and vibrant colors to create constructions that are reminiscent of undulating currents, algae blooms, and coral reefs, creating a vast ocean of meaning, symbolism, and emotion and ultimately our relationship to the sea. If we listen to the ocean, we can hear it sobbing, beckoning us to take action.
Krisanne Baker: Breathe
Krisanne Baker is a Coastal Maine artist whose work concerns water quality, availability and rights. Multimedia installations and paintings focus upon raising ocean health awareness, conservation, and to remediate the ocean’s balance through stewardship. Baker specifically focuses Phytoplankton as the basis of the ocean food chain and human survival.
“It's necessary to remember the limits of the give and take system between this planet and its inhabitants--that person-by-person, it is possible to turn the tide of our current failing environment and humanity.”
Adero Willard: Alleviating Quiet
Adero Willard lives as an artist and educator in Western Massachusetts. Her exhibit, Alleviating Quiet is a visual challenge to stillness. The intricacies of contrasting pattern and color on these large coil-built vessels present a visual clamor; voices as juxtaposing shapes on clay. “My continual pursuit to develop ornate and complex surfaces on the clay form works alongside an inclination to express identity through an abstract language of pattern and color, receding and advancing. Decoration is created using resists, layers of applied color, and etched surfaces. Ornamentation becomes foundation."
Exhibit runs September 7- October 5, 2019, Mon-Sat, 10:00am-4:00pm
