Press Release: Sidney Sussex College Choir at Cotuit Center for the Arts

Cotuit Center for the Arts presents the Sidney Sussex College Choir, Cambridge University in a special lunchtime concert on Friday, July 13, at 1 PM. The concert, part of the choir’s East Coast USA July Tour, is free and open to all.

The Sidney Sussex College Choir, under the direction of the musicologist and conductor David Skinner, will perform works by Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, William Harris, Eric Whitacre and more.

Sidney Sussex College was founded in 1596, on Valentine’s Day, and it is thought that a dedicated chapel choir must have existed in some form since then, as college has long been home to a wealth of musical ensembles and choral groups. Since 1976, when women were admitted to the college, the Choir of Sidney Sussex has blossomed into one of the most esteemed choral groups in Oxbridge.

The Choir performs a wide range of music from late medieval to newly commissioned works; its aim is to maintain a healthy balance of music from all periods. With the appointment of Skinner as Osborn Director of Music, the Choir has honed its specialty in Renaissance music, establishing a niche in making professional recordings for museums, art galleries, and national libraries.

The Choir also excels in music of the late 19th/early 20th centuries, The Choir appointed American composer Eric Whitacre as its first Composer in Residence in 2009. In 2015, that mantle was assumed by British composer and Choir alumnus Joanna Marsh.

The Choir conducts two to three international tours a year. Recent tour destinations have included Madrid, Rome, Utrecht, Dubai, and the US. The July 2018 US Tour will include Washington DC, Virginia, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, Rhode Island and Boston, as well as Cotuit.
