Cotuit Center for the Arts presents the rollicking musical comedy “Sweet Charity” June 26 through July 14 and July 24 through 28. Performances are Wednesday through Saturday at 7:30 PM, and Sunday at 4 PM. There is no performance on Wednesday, July 10. Michele Colley directs, with music direction by Malcolm Granger.

With a tuneful, groovy mid-1960s score by Cy Coleman, sparkling lyrics by Dorothy Fields, and a hilarious book by Neil Simon, “Sweet Charity” captures all the energy, humor, and heartbreak of Life in the Big City for one sweet and irrepressible optimist.

Based on the screenplay for Federico Fellini’s “Nights of Cabiria,” “Sweet Charity” explores the turbulent love live of Charity Hope Valentine, played by Teresa Willander, a hopelessly romantic dance hall hostess at the Fandango Ballroom in New York’s Times Square. Despite her bad luck with men and her frustrations with her job, she remains sweet and hopeful, as she encounters one awkward and amusing experience after another.

There are a bounty of much-loved songs: “Big Spender,” “If My Friends Could See Me Now,” “There’s Gotta Be Something Better Than This,” “I’m a Brass Band,” and “Baby Dream Your Dream,” as well as some exhilarating dance numbers.

“Sweet Charity” premiered on Broadway in 1966, where it was directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse. It was nominated for nine Tony Awards, and won for Fosse’s choreography. The show was adapted into a movie in 1969, with a slightly more optimistic ending.

Tickets are $40, $35 for balcony seats. There is a $2 discount for seniors and veterans, and a $5 discount for members.

Cotuit Center for the Arts is at 4404 Route 28 in Cotuit. For more information, visit www.artsonthecape.org or call 508-428-0669.
