Press Release - Woods Hole Film Festival: Best of the Fest at Cotuit Center for the Arts

Nov. 12, 2019

Cotuit Center for the Arts presents the annual screening of “The Best of the Woods Hole Film Festival” on Wednesday and Thursday, December 4 and 5, and Monday and Tuesday, December 9 and 10 at 7 PM in the main performance space. All films were included in the program of the 2019 Woods Hole Film Festival. Best of Fest films are selected by the Festival audience.

“It Started as a Joke,” by Julie Smith Klem and Ken Druckerman, won the Best Feature Documentary, Audience Award. It will be shown on December 4. The film chronicles the decade-long run of the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival and celebrates Mirman’s unique brand of humor and the healing properties of comedy, even in the most challenging of life’s circumstances. There are interviews with, and performances by, many well-known comedians.

The Best of the Fest Shorts features seven short animations, dramas, documentaries, and comedies and will be shown on December 5. Among the films are “Two Balloons,” an animation by Mark Smith about two adventurous lemurs who navigate their dirigibles halfway around the world to a place where happenstance and fate threaten to disrupt their reunion, and “The Neighbors’ Window,” a drama by Marshall Curry and Ben Goldberg about a middle-aged woman with two small children who finds her life shaken up with two free-spirited 20-somethings move in across the street.

“Runner,” by Bill Gallagher, winner of the Best of the Fest, Audience Award, will be shown on December 9. When he was only 8, Guor Mading Maker ran from capture in war-torn Sudan, eventually finding safety in the US. In his new life, he began running again, eventually qualifying for the 2012 Olympics. The film depicts his difficult and triumphant journey from refugee to world-renowned athlete.

“Nose to Tail,” by Jesse Zigelstein, winner of the Jury Award, will be shown December 10. Aaron Abrams (“Hannibal,” “Blindspot”) stars as a talented, but abrasive chef, struggling with his personal demons and the pressures of running a high-end restaurant. Over the course of one fateful and frantic day, he faces a rash of private trials and professional tribulations in a desperate bid to save the business that he has sacrificed virtually everything in his life to build.
