Press Release: Member Movie Night to Feature “The Favourite” at Cotuit Center for the Arts
Feb. 16, 2019 / Press ReleaseCotuit Center for the Arts presents Member Movie Night on Saturday, March 2, at 7:30 PM. Yorgos Lanthimos’ award-winning 2018 film, “The Favourite,” will be shown. The movie is free to members and $5 for non-members.
“’The Favourite’ is a wildly entertaining, bracingly cynical comedy of royal manners,” according to the New York Times. “It’s a farce with teeth.” Vulture wrote, “Though mostly twaddle as history, Yorgos Lanthimos’s ‘The Favourite’ is wonderful, nasty fun, a period drama (wigs, breeches, beauty spots) that holds the screen with gnashing teeth and slashing nails.”
It is the early 18th century and England is at war with France. A sickly and ill-tempered Queen Anne (played by Olivia Coleman) rules England with the help of her advisor and close friend Lady Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz). A new servant, Abigail Masham (Emma Stone) arrives, charming Sarah, and, eventually, Queen Anne, with darkly hilarious unexpected consequences for all.
Based on historical fact, as written by Lady Sarah, an ancestor of Winston Churchill, the film imagines the relationships among these three strong and ferocious women as they vie for control, power, and attention as they pursue quirky pastimes in splendid period costume amid gorgeous spectacle.
“The Favourite” premiered at the 75th Venice International Film Festival in August, where it won the Grand Jury Prize and the Best Actress Award for Coleman. It has received multiple awards and nominations since, including seven awards from the British Academy Film Awards, a Golden Globe, and 10 British Independent Film Awards. It has been nominated for 10 Oscars, including Best Picture.
