Press Release: March-April Exhibits at Cotuit Center for the Arts
Jan. 17, 2019 / Press ReleaseA CONTROVERSIAL SATIRICAL ART EXHIBIT HAS ITS FIRST EVER SHOWING ON CAPE COD AT COTUIT CENTER FOR THE ARTS—ONE OF THREE NEW EXHIBITS OPENING IN MARCH!
Art lovers will have the chance to experience three very different exhibits beginning March 2nd to April 20th at Cotuit Center for the Arts – including Political Satire, a Twist on Reality, and Serious Fun.
1) Liberty and Justice: The Sweet to Satirical Art of Salley Mavor
Likely to generate some heated discussion, Falmouth artist, Salley Mavor presents a satirical look at the Trump administration using her signature medium, small hand-stitched dolls. Known for most of her career as an illustrator of children’s books, Mavor, at the age of 60, decided to focus on what’s happening in the real world. The result is Liberty and Justice, a provocative look at today’s political environment. The exhibit features photographs of scenes Mavor created using dolls of President Trump, Mike Pence, and other political figures accompanied by a stop action film. (The “twitter” bird plays a prominent role).
While Mavor’s foray into political art is the centerpiece of the exhibit, the show also includes some of her “very sweet” original embroidered children’s book illustrations. It’s a fascinating artistic evolution from “innocence” to difficult real-world issues.

2) Reinventing the Real – Georganna Lenssen
The works of contemporary artist Georganna Lenssen will awaken your senses, spark your imagination, and put a smile on your face. Whether painting still life objects in her studio, or capturing nature’s beauty plein air, Lenssen’s interpretation of the world around her is bursting with energy.
From exquisitely patterned African wild dogs, to sensual frosted cakes, to the secrets lying within abandoned structures, Lenssen finds inspiration in the chaos of colors, shapes, and textures that surround all of us. The result is an exhibit that will make you look at everyday sights in a very new way.

3) Serious Fun – A Juried Exhibit
This year, Cotuit Center for the Arts will have two open juried exhibits.
The first, “Serious Fun” will be judged by Salley Mavor who says, “Creating art is serious business, but it can be fun, too. Entries for the juried show should be pieces with a playful aspect, either through subject matter or materials and techniques. The artwork can be fun to make or look at and anything from humorous to heartfelt.”
Artists are encouraged to submit entries in all artistic mediums, 2 and 3 dimensional, videos, or anything that strikes their imagination.
