Class Description
Day 1 - July 25
On the first day this class, we’ll work on the basics of watercolor. Even experts will learn some new tricks! Using a wet-on-wet approach, we’ll demolish the old tropes – yes, you CAN change things, “mud” does NOT have to be the usual result of color mixing, controlling the “uncontrollable” IS possible, and MORE!
We start with working with the water, learning how to mix colors, understanding paper, and using the strengths (and weaknesses) of the medium to your advantage. After those exercises, we’ll work on several paintings where lifting is an important part of the approach.
Within these hours (including a ½ hour for lunch), we’ll work lots of wet paint along with using many different surfaces and methods.
The first day focuses on new techniques, learning to control the uncontrollable, and having a blast with this amazing medium.
Day 2 - July 26
As we get more focused in our subjects, we’ll use the techniques learned the first day for exercises with reflections, still water, and the ocean. (We’ll have a ½ for lunch today as well.)
We’ll have a special exercise called “fight imposter syndrome!” where we’ll deconstruct several famous watercolor paintings with watery subjects.
While I will bring subjects for all of these exercises, this is a great time to bring photos that you’re interested in, scared to do, or ready for a challenge. We’ll take some time going over the building of a watercolor painting.
The goal for the two days is to get you excited and unafraid to tackle something that seems hard. You can do it!
