Synopsis
The Finishing Touch centers three women as they navigate aging, motherhood, and the healing process. An unfinished quilt ties each of them together to patch up past trauma.
Character Descriptions (ages describe characters' ages, not performers' ages)
Rose Wellfold (late-70s): the matriarch of the family, Rose is hardened by age and marital problems but also loves her only daughter, Wendy. She struggles with rheumatoid arthritis and alcoholism. Her wish is to give Wendy a quilt for her long-awaited grandchild, but she cannot finish it due to the RA.
Wendy Wellfold (mid-40s): a foil to Rose, Wendy is hopeful about her future — as a spouse and an adoptive mother. At the beginning, Wendy is anxiously awaiting word from the adoption agency. She has tried to have a child of her own, but she is infertile. Wendy is trying to get her mother to stop drinking but has had little success.
Sarah Barnes (early-70s): Sarah is a home health aide and pregnancy/birth doula. Rose is very doubtful of Sarah at first but comes to trust her, becoming a confidant and friend. The two of them bond over marital problems as well as a shared love of quilting and gardening. Sarah offers to help Rose finish the quilt she started. Unbeknownst to Rose or Wendy, Sarah is also a recovering alcoholic and suffered a miscarriage.
